Dear Readers,
Fall is beginning to show its splendor bit by bit here along the coast of Maine. Brilliant reds and yellows are peeking through the trees although the weather hasn’t decided how far to cool down. A new season has definitely begun!
Pam at Pemiquid Point, Maine
The combination of the freshest air, delicious apples (just picked) and pumpkins populating the fields everywhere is breathtaking. As one gatekeeper said to me at a park recently when I asked him why he relocated to Maine, “I love the serenity I can only find here.”

The art community shines here as well. The creativity demonstrated in studios and galleries is endless. From Abbie Read’s thousands of book covers made into wall hangings to Lisa Kyle’s beautiful sunflower studies and landscapes, the quality of the work is stunning. Hope your eyes have been engaged over the summer by a multitude of art forms.

We hope Laura Munson’s recent podcast with Lynne Spriggs O’Connor, a fellow Maine aficionado, will spark your interest in another beautiful state, Montana. These two authors share great affection for their surroundings and chat about how they have been inspired by the beauty of their home landscapes.
In Lynne’s new memoir “Elk Love,” she describes her journey to seek a new life as she searches for a healing place from demanding jobs and a lonely lifestyle in the East. How she found renewal and what she discovered may cause you to reexamine your own daily life and think more about nature. We think this debut author is on her way to bringing us more thought-provoking books.
This year we have been seeing a proliferation of memoirs like Lynne’s that are soul-searching, fearless and voice concern about our planet and its inhabitants. These authors’ journeys may encourage you to think about how the world can be made better for all of us and what it takes to accomplish that.
These books describe the lives of women fighting for health justice; adventuring globally to find purpose; examining the uniqueness of nature and teaching digital literacy in remote Afghan areas. Kudos to these changemakers! Their stories are remarkable.
If you'd like one of these two books, be the first to respond and tell us which book you would like and it will be yours!

My yummy Pumpkin & Black Bean Soup discovered on a visit to Rockland, Maine. | Photo: P. Burke
Since pumpkin season is here, I must share a 30-minute recipe from eatingwell.com for a most scrumptious soup similar to the one I had at Clan MacLaren café in Rockland, Maine. Whoever thought that pumpkin & black bean soup would be so tasty? If you want the simple and quick way to make it, use canned beans and pumpkin.
I haven’t been home to cook this yet, but as soon as I get there, I will give it a try. Hope you enjoy some this fall and add whatever toppings suit your fancy. Toasted pumpkin seeds are a nice touch as well as crunchy tortilla strips.
Leaving you with Lynne Spriggs O’Connor’s solution to finding serenity in the wilds of Montana:
“Look at animals. They hibernate. They go underground. They cocoon. They rest. When they’re being quiet and internal, the presence comes much more easily. I just breathed into it.”
