[TWE NEWS] Summer Escape—Laura’s Wild Why-Bold Spitfires-Watermelon Pizza

July 4, 2025

Hello Readers,

Are you going to hit the road this summer? I ran across this encouraging quote from St. Augustine, and I knew it was time for me to venture out of town.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

I am a booklover and like to read many pages!

Our travel series produced by travel writer Laurie King has also spurred me on. In fact, on my recent trip to the San Francisco area (to escape the triples), I was able to spend some time with Laurie and her creative artist-designer husband, Jim.

Jim and Laurie have been essential to our book writing endeavors at TWE. Jim helped design and lay out our TWE Spotlight books with Laurie doing the editing and some reporting. We are grateful for their continued help on all fronts here!

TWE 367: Bestselling Author Laura Munson on Reconnecting with Your Wild Why

Stacey Gualandi visited with another TWE pal, Laura Munson, founder of Haven Writing Retreats, via zoom recently. Laura is definitely part of our changemaker group here as her books continue to encourage us to keep searching the world as she does for people who are seeking positive change.

You can tell Laura is a seeker just by the topics she writes about. Her newest, The Wild Why, will captivate you with her search for wonder; quest for answers to all questions and endless journey to connect people.

Their conversation is a reunion of sorts as Stacey has spoken with Laura since 2011 here on TWE! You can tell this podcast is between two good friends, and it may move you to seek your own wonder. Give it a listen and you’ll see.

TWE SPOTLIGHTS FEARLESS WOMEN: The Daring Spitfires of WWII

We told you about Spitfires, our most recent book discovery by Becky Aikman, in our last newsletter and received several requests for a copy.

The word "spitfires" describes the women featured in the book perfectly. It can mean “live wire,” “hell on wheels,” unapologetic, and as Becky Aikman says, “audacious!” We love that word!

The 25 trailblazing women pilots Becky writes about were almost lost in history. If not for Becky’s mother remembering and being inspired by them when she was a child during World War II, they would have disappeared further into obscurity.

It took Becky’s digging and searching through diaries in attics to bring their story to life. All these years later, they inspire us. Their spirit of adventure is incomparable.

WATERMELON PIZZA

When you think about July 4th, you may picture a picnic with a variety of tasty treats including watermelon. I do, as we always had watermelon in the summer growing up. It’s considered healthy and full of nutrients like vitamins A and C, potassium as well as having a high water content.

Who knew that you could make many mouthwatering desserts with it? If you go on watermelon.org, you will see recipes for everything from watermelon fries, cakes, popsicles and even pizza! We decided to try out the sweet watermelon pizza just for fun.

Amazingly, it tasted terrific. It’s a fruit delight without the extra calories of real pizza. The sky’s the limit as to what you can add and great to make with kids. Give it a try!

"Ordinary women doing extraordinary things."

Leaving you with this quote from Laura Munson:

If you have ever looked at our world and thought, How can I help? There’s proof of your wonder.
It’s wondering about our world and the people in it that sustains our world. It’s valuing connection versus division. We simply have to be connected to, and invested in, our world, and that starts in our own community.
That’s the perfect place to practice….at the grocery store, on the soccer sidelines, in the office elevator, at the dinner table. Practice, practice, practice.

Happy Fourth of July!

Until next time,

Pam, Cheryl and The TWE Team
