[TWE NEWS] Quilt Creations/Beth’s Bold Travels/Clare Fights Fire/Zesty Key Limes

March 12, 2025

Hello Readers,

Every so often do you find yourself in awe of someone’s talent, amazed by what they can create? That happened to me when I recently attended The Modern Quilt Guild in Phoenix. I am not a quilter but have long admired the beauty and unbelievable variety of quilts like the one you see here.

When I laid eyes on “Dignity” by Veruschka Zarate (below) from Pride and Joy Quilting, I stopped short. The quilt is Zeruschka’s tribute to the fortitude of Indigenous Peoples, and it is a stunner!

Best in Show "Dignity" quilt by Veruschka Zakate

Both front and back were carefully machine and paper pieced together. It took Veruschka five years and countless hours of drafting, testing and sewing to receive Best in Show at this popular Quiltcon event. We are hoping to talk to Veruschka to find out more about her inspiration and the execution of this masterpiece.

Finding inspiration can be a challenge as well as an exciting adventure. We think one way to pursue it is through travel.

We want to explore travel through several different lenses with experts and adventurers who have a passion for searching out fascinating places and discovering new experiences.

TWE 356: How To Travel Boldly and Get Back Into Travel with Beth Whitman—Adventurer, Founder, WanderTours

Our award-winning travel writer Laurie McAndish King will talk to women who make travel their business and their passion in four upcoming podcasts over the next two months. Tour leader Beth Whitman is her first guest, whose mission is to travel boldly to out-of-the-way destinations.

She offers journeys to Lapland, Vietnam, India and the Galapagos Islands as well as Antarctica and more. Her WanderTours specializes in women-only tours.

We welcome her travel advice on how to find interesting and unusual destinations. If you are planning to travel this year, you'll enjoy her conversation and especially her packing tips.

TWE 357: Clare Frank—From Seasonal Firefighter to California’s First Female Chief of Fire Protection

In light of the horrendous fires that swept the Los Angeles area and ravage other parts of the country, we thought firefighter Clare Frank would be a fascinating guest for TWE. The adventurous Alenka Vrecek hosted this podcast with Clare, her neighbor in California, to talk about her incredible career as the highest-ranking female firefighter in CA history. How does a woman rise to that rank in that profession?

Clare, who's just authored a new memoir "Burnt," discussed how she did it and about her calling from age seven to fight fires. She talked about what a tough and demanding journey it was to make it to the top of the ladder.

Hers is a fascinating life story full of interesting twists and turns. Her ideas about how to protect neighborhoods against future fires were eye-opening. They are definitely worth checking out.

Zesty Key Lime Treat

It’s time for key lime pie--actually any time is a good time for me to have a slice of this delicious dessert. I recently learned how simple it is to make one, even if you can’t find fresh key limes and use regular limes. The pie above is not mine but was as tasty as one could be.

Here are the ingredients for Jennifer Segal's recipe you can find at Once Upon a Chef:

I can’t wait to try this recipe! And no eggs! Cook time, 25 minutes!

Leaving you with Veruschka’s thoughts when her quilt won Best in Show:

“Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that when I reached out to Artist Laureate DC Lamphere in 2020, seeking and graciously receiving his permission to create a quilt tribute to his awe-inspiring “Dignity” statue, I would one day be standing here… receiving the Best in Show.
What an unimaginable honor.”

Evidence that dreams can come true!

Until next time,

Pam, Cheryl and The TWE Team
